Your safety and health condition is very important to us throughout your stay.  We adhere to strict Ayahuasca medical guidelines we have put in place to ensure you start your retreat in the best condition possible. When you register a booking you will be asked to provide the list of medications you are taking and your health condition.

Certain drugs and medications are not compatible with Ayahuasca, it is important that you stop taking them a sufficient time before starting the retreat in order to cleanse your body from these substances. Please consult your doctor prior to stopping any medications as it can be harmful to your health.

Heart/Cardiovascular Conditions

If you have any high blood pressure or cardiovascular heart conditions it is not recommended you participate in ceremonies. Ayahuasca can elevate the blood pressure and increase heart attack risks. People with such conditions should not attend Ayahuasca ceremonies and consider other natural medicines to help with their conditions.

 

Diabetes

People with diabetes have more risk involved with the absorption of Ayahuasca. The use of the MAOIs present in Ayahuasca can alter blood sugar levels via hypoglycemic effects. MAOIs may change the amount of insulin or oral anti-diabetic medication that is needed by your body. People with severe unstable diabetes should not take Ayahuasca because of this risk. People with less severe diabetes should contact us prior to booking a retreat to discuss the particulars of the case including the possibility of a modified dieta.

 

Medication that is unsafe with Ayahuasca:

  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): 4 – 6 weeks prior
  • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs): 6 or 8 weeks prior, 4 weeks after
  • Other Anti-Depressants: 6 weeks prior, 4 weeks after
  • Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants (and sleeping pills): 3 to 4 weeks prior
  • Anti-hypertensives (blood pressure medications): 2 to 6 weeks prior, depending on medication
  • Antibiotics: 48 hours prior

 

Recreational drugs:

Recreational drugs should not in any case be combined with Ayahuasca.

  • Cannabis
  • Cocaine
  • Any psychedelic drugs
  • Amphetamines
  • Ecstasy

 

Psychological conditions:

People with psychological conditions such as borderline disorders, bipolar disorders, psychosis, and schizophrenia can be at risk if they use Ayahuasca.

If you suffer from depression Ayahuasca has shown very good outcomes and healed people, in this case you should stop your medication as described above.
